How do you calculate dividend yield?
Dividend yield = (Annual dividends per share ÷ Stock price) × 100. For example, a $100 stock paying $4/year has a 4% yield.
How is dividend yield typically compared?
There is no yield Tickerplace rates as good. Utilities and REITs often print 4–6%. Very high yields (10%+) can coincide with a fallen price or a dividend that later gets cut. Compare to sector peers and payout coverage.
Is dividend yield the same as total return?
No. Dividend yield is income only. Total return includes price appreciation plus dividends. A stock can have a 3% yield but 15% total return if the price rises.
